OK, this one's a beauty, as we say here in Australia! The Sirius Black escape from Azkaban, that is.

The camera (or your mind's eye) pans to a poster with a picture of an angry, no FURIOUS, Sirius Black who is raging. After being wrongfully accused, sentenced to death, and denied any possibility of early release from the awful Azkaban prison, he suddenly disappears.

Black reportedly used his "Animagus" form to escape Azkaban in the third book in the series, Harry Potter, and the Prisoner of Azkaban (the book where I believe the narrative first begins to get "dark"). Rowling's novels claim that witches and wizards with the capacity to transform into animals at will are referred to as "Animagus." 

And, as we now know, Sirius' animagus resembles a giant black dog, which earnt him the nickname during the series of "Padfoot."

Sirius was able to get past the bars of his cell at Azkaban by changing into a dog using his Animagus powers. The Dementors, the gloomy monsters who guard Azkaban, did not notice Sirius's escape since they were unaware that a dog was an Animagus. Sirius spent years hiding out near to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after swimming to the continent. And I bet the fleas bit hard during that swim!

He took up the name, "Scabbers", and starting impersonating the rat that belonged to Ron Weasley, thereby concealing his actual identity. Later, it is discovered that Peter Pettigrew (who had previously been thought to be dead) was alive...as Scabbers, Ron's pet rat! 

Because Pettigrew, in Sirius' opinion, was the real traitor and the one behind James and Lily Potter's demise, he had been looking for him. Sirius finally receives justice and is set free once the truth about Pettigrew's treachery and Sirius' innocence is revealed.
